Fun Facts about Our Area
- Founded as a village by fur trader, Jacob Smith, in 1819, Flint was a major lumbering area on the historic Saginaw Trail during the 19th century. Incorporated as a city in 1855, Flint later became a leading manufacturer of carriages and other vehicles earning it the nickname "Vehicle City."
- In 1908, William Crapo Durant formed General Motors in Flint. The General Motors Fisher Body Plant Number One was the home of the Flint Sit-Down Strike of 1936–37. That strike played a vital role in the formation of the United Auto Workers and General Motors eventually became an automobile manufacturing powerhouse for Buicks and Chevrolets.
- During World War II, manufacturing facilities in Flint churned out tanks and other war materials. Over 2,000 Buick M18 “Hellcat” tanks were built in Flint.
- Marcus Davenport, a local teacher turned independent film maker, chronicles Flint's ties to basketball and the basketball culture in his documentary, Flint Star: The Motion Picture.
